Red Cross Report Finds: US Tortured and Doctors Helped!

April 7, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The Red Cross “torture” report sent to the Bush administration in February 2007, concludes without a doubt that the United States Government’s horrifying treatment of fourteen high-value detainees “…quite unequivocally, constituted torture.” What is even worse, if there is such a thing more despicable, than our own government committing cruel and inhumane acts of torture on human beings, is that the doctors who swore an oath to do no harm, used their medical training to keep prisoners alive in order to subject them to further torture.

The International Committee of the Red Cross minces no words when it states the medical personnel’s participation in torture amounted to a “gross breach of medical ethics.”

The Red Cross Report concluded that the medical personnel’s role as a facilitator of torture, while watching prisoners subjected to acts of waterboarding and other physically violent acts, without taking steps to stop it, meant the doctors’ “condoned and participated in ill treatment,” in complete violation of medical ethics.

Portions of the Red Cross confidential report have been leaked out these past two years, but this is the first time the whole report, all forty-three pages, is available to read in its entirety, complete with detailed descriptions of unspeakable acts of torture, including interviews with the 14 prisoners. Journalist Mark Danner, posted the entire report on the website of the New York Review of Books on Monday.

Along with the report is an excellent piece of investigative journalism by Danner, providing a road map of horror, illustrating how our country, during the Bush administration, went from a protector of human rights to one of the worst offenders on the international stage.

The Red Cross torture report and Danner’s accompanying article is a must read. Anyone reading the graphic details of this report, describing what CIA operatives did in the name of the “war against terror,” can no longer deny that the United States committed appalling acts of torture, to our utter shame.

Did you honestly expect the Bush Administration to eschew cruel, inhumane, and downright evil methods of enforcing their will on humanity? Seriously? Bush didn’t even flinch from violating the Constitution to spy on Americans in the USA; it would be silly to think he wouldn’t torture foreigners. Frankly, I’m surprised no one has yet turned up the proof that he had American citizens tortured.
