Washington DC Approves Law to Recognize Same-sex Marriage

May 5, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Washington DC city council has voted to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other US states.  The resolution was passed in the council by 12 votes to one.

D.C. Council member Marion Barry, the only council member to vote against the bill today, predicted there could be a “civil war” in the District if the Council decides to take up a broader gay marriage bill later this year.

The measure will now go to Mayor Adrian Fenty for approval; Fenty has said that he plans to sign off on it. Because Washington DC is not a state, the decision will now have to be approved by Congress before it can become law.

Four US states – Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa – now permit gay marriage, and legislation to allow it is in progress in other states.

Hey, if you want gays to pay taxes, it’s unreasonable to deny them the same rights and privileges that everyone else gets. Either legalize gay marriage, or outlaw straight marriage. Both ways work.
