Detroit elects Dave Bing New Mayor

May 6, 2009

(ChattahBox) — As a former native Detroiter, I am very proud end elated to hear Dave Bing has been elected mayor. Bing beat out Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. in the race to serve out the remainder of the term left behind by Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in September. According to the Detroit News, Bing captured 52 percent of the vote, but sadly only 15 percent of registered voters cast ballots at the polls or absentee. That’s roughly 92,000 votes.

Everyone knows Bing faces a monumental task, as he spoke of what he wants to do in the coming months:

“What we will bring to this government is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor’s office,” he told the crowd. “…We will make sure that our neighborhoods are safe. We will start immediately to make sure our kids get the best education they can possibly get.”

The reason I am very happy to see the former Piston great and successful businessman elected is for the honesty and integrity I think he brings to the mayor’s office.” It’s been many years IMHO since Detroit has had that, electing one bad apple after another, to the point of becoming a national joke with the follies of Kilpatrick.  With the current problems Detroit has, and the bungling city council he has to deal with, Bing has his work cut out for him.  But perhaps there are better times ahead for Detroit today.
