Police hunt for mom and son who fled to avoid chemo treatment

May 20, 2009

US (ChattahBox) –- A warrant was issued for the arrest of a mother and her 13-year-old son after they did not appear in court yesterday in a case where medicine versus faith has become a legal clash. The hearing was scheduled to review an X-ray ordered by the court to assess whether the Daniel’s cancer was worsening. Colleen Hauser and her son Daniel, who has Hodgkin’s lymphoma, have not been seen by the authorities since leaving their Minnesota home on Monday after a doctor’s appointment revealed that the boy’s tumor had spread.

A judge in New Ulm, Minnesota, has ordered Mrs Hauser’s arrest for being in contempt of court after ruling last week that she and her husband were neglecting their son. He also called for Daniel to be placed in foster care. Daniel Hauser was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January and received his only chemotherapy and radiation treatment that month. He did not return for a second treatment in February and the family began substituting alternative care, including herbs and vitamins. The cancer is considered highly curable with chemotherapy and radiation, but the family have refused chemotherapy on religious grounds. They say they are Roman Catholic but are also members of a Missouri-based American Indian sect called the Nemenhah Band, which favours “natural” healing methods such as alternative medicines and herbal remedies. Daniel’s father, Anthony, told the authorities he has not seen his family since Monday after his wife said she was leaving “for a time”.

Very sad situation. I hope this child gets the care he needs. And his mother thrown in jail.
