Powell Strikes Back: “Mr. Cheney is Ill-Informed”

May 24, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, while appearing on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” had a little something to say to both Dick Cheney and controversial conservative talk show entertainer, Rush Limbaugh, in response to their recent nasty rhetoric and criticism of Powell.

Powell made it clear that he wasn’t backing down from the recent venomous attacks by Cheney and Limbaugh, claiming Powell should leave the Democratic party after endorsing Barack Obama for president. Colin Powell made it known he has no intention of leaving the Republican Party.

During a recent appearance on “Face the Nation,” Former Vice President Cheney, when asked if he would choose Rush Limbaugh over Colin Powell, as a Republican leader, Cheney said yes, he would. He also snidely attacked Powell, by saying he assumed Powell had already left the Republican Party, “I assumed that that is some indication of his loyalty,” said Cheney.

Rush Limbaugh teamed up with Cheney in attacking the former four-star General, Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, saying Powell should become a Democrat and suggesting that Powell endorsed Obama for president because he was black. Powell called Limbaugh’s use of race in making his attacks, “unfortunate.”

Political observers were stunned when Cheney publicly maligned Colin Powell.

Cheney has been on a media blitz of late, attacking President Obama, claiming he is making America less safe, because he plans to close Guantanamo Bay prison and stop torturing detainees.

Powell said during his “Face the Nation” appearance that Cheney was “ill informed,” suggesting that he had no intention of leaving the Republican party to the extreme conservative base of the party. Powell called for his party to become more inclusive, allowing individuals with more moderate views.

“On almost every demographic indicator the Republican Party is losing,” Powell said. Unless the Republican Party takes a hard look at itself, it will continue to suffer losses.

He also disapproved of the immense power Rush Limbaugh, a radio entertainer, has over Republican party members, giving him a veto over their beliefs. He noted the recent cases of Republican leaders, most notably Chariman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele, who were forced to issue apologies after “mildly criticizing” Limbaugh.

Let there be no mistake, Colin Powell is still a Republican.
