Veto Overridden In Bill That Allows Handguns In Bars

June 8, 2009

Tennessee (ChattahBox) – Tennessee lawmakers have made the controversial move of overruling an attempt at vetoing a bill that would make it illegal to carry handguns into bars, and other places that serve alcohol.

Governor Phil Bredesen (D) had originally vetoed the bill, saying that he felt that “we can exercise our second amendment rights and common sense at the same time”, bringing up the point that making it easier for those with handguns to consume alcohol at the same time is less than intelligent.

While the bill itself does state that those who have handguns on them cannot drink at the same time, and that individual establishment owners can bar guns from the premises, many critics feel that it is still a risky move trusting firearms to those within easy access to alcohol in an enclosed space.

According to a story in RAW, the original veto created quite a bit of anger from the bill’s main supporter, Rep. Curry Todd ( R ), who allegedly said:

“I want to tell you what the governor can do with that piece of paper he just sent.”

Amazing how this story fails to mention that this bill is for handgun permit holders who have passed a tbi background check to be able to carry in restaurants that serve alchool instead of having to leave their guns in the parking lot to be stolen… A permit holder, like it has always been can not have any alchool while carrying..not a sip… No holder would risk this after paying 200+ dollars for a permit, 75+ for handgun carry class, and 300-1200 on a handgun that they can carry… Tennessee is the 37th state to have this law… Hardly controversial…

It is controversial because it puts a lot of risk down on something that ‘No one would do’. Would someone who has a gun legally, has spent a great deal of money to own, and has studied how to use it risk everything in their lives by shooting someone during an argument? They have in the past.

My point being that your doesn’t hold that much water, Liam.
