The John Ensign Affair and the Stench of GOP Hypocrisy

June 18, 2009

(ChattahBox)— Family values advocate and born again Christian, Sen. John Ensign, is yet another prime example of Republican hypocrisy. Ensign 51, publicly admitted this week to cheating on his wife, with former campaign staffer, Cindy Hampton, 46, from 2007 until late last year.

There are also reports coming out that this may not be the first time Ensign cheated on his wife. All these years of Ensign taking the sanctimonious moral high-ground has now come back to haunt him.

As scandals go this one at first blush, seemed relatively mild, but there are many unanswered questions, regarding payment of hush money to both his ex-mistress’ husband and son and unsubstantiated claims made by Ensign that he came forward, because of a blackmail demand made by Cindy Hampton’s husband, Doug.

An extortion claim that if true, was not reported to the FBI by Ensign. Now, his aides seem to be backtracking on the blackmail angle, saying instead, Doug Hampton threatened to go to a news outlet about the affair. Answers to these lingering questions about the details of his affair, are sure to trickle out in the days and weeks ahead. But what concerns this writer most about Ensign’s conduct is his rank hypocrisy.

Ensign is a member the Promise Keepers, an all male cult-like evangelical group that promotes marital fidelity and he has always made a point to condemn others for their personal failings.

Sen. Ensign was ruthless in his condemnation of former President Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal, calling on Clinton to resign, saying Clinton “has no credibility left.” Ensign demanded the resignation of Larry Craig, calling him a “disgrace” when Craig was arrested in a men’s bathroom, allegedly for soliciting sex from a male undercover policeman.

Ensign went further with his rhetoric against Craig, “There’s too many people that paint with a broad brush that we’re all corrupt, we’re all amoral. … And having these kinds of things happen, whether it’s a Republican or Democratic senator — we certainly have had plenty of Democratic scandals in the past — we need people who are in office who will hold themselves to a little higher standard,” said Ensign in 2007.

When Republican Sen. David Vitter admitted to an affair and was linked to a high-priced call girl service, Ensign stayed silent.

Sen. Ensign has strongly opposed gay marriage, endorsing a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, extolling the virtues and the sanctity of marriage in the process.

“Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country and protecting it is, in my mind, worth the extraordinary step of amending our constitution,” said Ensign in 2004.

When even uber-conservative Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, suggests Sen. Ensign has a hypocrisy problem, then Sen. Ensign, you really have a hypocrisy problem.

“It’s disappointing. It really is. I think that’s why the Republicans are having trouble and have had trouble over the last three years with many voters is because there is a sense of hypocrisy…. If you’re going to champion those issues you’ve got to live by a higher standard,” said Perkins.

It’s time for Sen. Ensign to end his sanctimonious moral preaching to the rest of us about family values.

Senator Ensign is a veterinarian by training. How can his extra-marital fence-jumping habit be broken?

It’s time for Ensign and the rest of the Nazi Party (laughingly calling themselves “Republicans” in the USA) to move down to Argentina, where such hypocrisy is considered normal behavior by the machismo crowd.

And if he doesn’t resign, he should be impeached.

The Sen. Ensign story is front page above the fold two days in a row, while the more egregious adultery of Rep. Loretta Sanchez is completely ignored by the congressional media? Could it be that she is a Democrat? Extra, extra, read all about it–
