Massachusetts Sues US Government Over Gay Marriage

July 9, 2009

Massachusetts (ChattahBox) – ‘Banned in Boston’ has taken a new turn. The state of Massachusetts has filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S government, stating that the law banning gay marriage is discriminatory.

The lawsuit cites the fact that the rest of the nation has the option of not recognizing the status of a couple’s marriage in Massachusetts, and says that it undermines the state’s decision to perform the legal ceremonies.

“They are entitled to equal treatment under the laws regardless of whether they are gay or straight,” Attorney General Martha Coakley was quoted as saying in the Washington Times, during a news conference.

The lawsuit specifically targets the law that would allow other states to deny a couple’s marital status based on their opinion of what constitutes a marriage.

“In enacting DOMA, Congress overstepped its authority, undermined states’ efforts to recognize marriages between same-sex couples, and codified an animus towards gay and lesbian people,” the lawsuit alleges.

The move has been cheered by gay rights groups across the country, and gained criticism by those who oppose gay marriage.

Correct me if I’m wrong but what is more important than the state is the people.

They should let the people vote on this issue like California. It’s hardly within the states rights to sue anyone if it’s not in the majority of the peoples interests.

Traditional marriage should be preserved in my opionion. This isn’t a relegious point of view, just a common sense one. C’mon people use your head!
