New Hampshire Governor Lynch Vetoes Medical Marijuana Bill

July 10, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Gov. John Lynch vetoed legislation Friday that would have made New Hampshire the 14th state to legalize medical marijuana.  Can’t blame the GOP for this one as I anticipated, because Lynch is a democrat, who is blaming his decision over concerns of distribution and cultivation. Lynch fears the benefits of allowing severely ill people some comfort are overweighed by his fears that the bill did not adequately address law enforcement concerns about how the marijuana would have been cultivated and distributed:  “The provisions made for law enforcement to check on the status of an individual who asserts protection under the proposed law are too narrow.” This is despite the fact that lawmakers had made extensive changes to the bill in hopes of winning over Lynch, who had been critical from the start. You can read Lynch’s explanation for vetoing the bill here

Lynch ends his explanation by saying “I am regretfully vetoing HB 648-FN”. Fine if that’s the case, Lynch needs to publicly be specific about what he wants changed to get this bill passed, otherwise this is just another politician politely making excuses for being closed minded.   According to Boston.com, the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Evalyn Merrick, said Friday she will push for an override, but has an up hill battle to get more votes in the NH senate to get a  two-thirds majority.

Law Enforcement has used drug laws to push their way into people lives in ways never intended by the Constitution. A patient and a doctor should not be separated by a cop or a law. Drug laws were meant to protect citizens from the dangers associated with addiction not from drugs themselves. However, drug laws have become a serious addiction with law enforcement.
