President Obama Chooses Alabama Doctor Benjamin as Surgeon General

July 13, 2009

(ChattahBox) — President Barack Obama has selected Dr. Regina Benjamin, an African-American Alabama family physician who specializes in rural health care, as the new U.S. surgeon general. Benjamin will be the President’s second choice for Surgeon General, after his first choice, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, declined the position.

According to Wikipedia, Dr. Benjamin’s strong social conscience has lead her to spend time doing missionary work in Honduras and is on the Board of Physicians for Human Rights. Her interests include environmental issues and eco and adventure travel.
Dr. Benjamin is the founder and chief executive officer of a rural health clinic in Bayou La Batre, Ala.. Hurricana Katrina destroyed the clinic in 2005, and then when it was rebuilt, the clinic burned down on the eve of re-opening. She made headlines when she rebuilt the clinic a second time.

In 2002, she became the president of the Alabama Medical Association, making her the first African-American woman to be president of a state medical society in the United States. In September, she was one of 25 recipients of the $500,000 “genius awards,” awarded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

I’m really liking this choice. Obama doesn’t have the best track record with his nominations, but this is a home run.

From what I’ve read about her, she seems to have all the qualities to make the best Surgeon General in recent memory.

I met her a few years back. She is a warm wonderful person who will make a great surgeon general.
