Committee for Justice launches TV ads smearing Sonia Sotomayor

July 15, 2009

A right-wing organization called Committee for Justice (CFJ) has just unveiled a new add calling for Sonia Sotomayor’s defeat. The CFJ was originally created in 2002 by C. Boyden Gray in order to help conservative Bush nomineesthrough the Senate confirmation process, via television and published advertisements.  But the CFJ have found a new purpose in life, trying to stop any nominations that president Obama might make. In the new ad the CFJ claims that Sotomayor led a violent terrorist organization, which is apparently referring to her service on the board of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund is by most accounts, a mainstream civil rights group that protects Latinos against race discrimination.

The ad also tries to tie Sotomayor to “Obama’s ‘pal’ Bill Ayres, the former radical who spent 10 years as a fugitive in the 1970s when he was part of the “Weather Underground, before becoming an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The CFJ have previously run two other ads smearing Sotomayor – one contrasting her to Martin Luther King and the other claiming she wants to “take away your guns.”

The CFJ, is so over-the-top that their nonsensical attacks will only appeal to the totally gullible and of course conservative republicans.  Then again that’s a lot of people unfortunately.
