Obama Calls Policeman Who Arrested Prof. to Make Peace

July 24, 2009

(ChattahBox) — An incident that has a lot of symbolism of racial profiling but has really been blown out of scope because of national scrutiny, may be finally at it’s end.  The arrest of Prof. Henry Louis Gates Jr., a prominent Harvard scholar of African-American history, who was arrested after breaking into his own home after returning from a trip without his keys which sparked national media coverage. It was a lose-lose situation for Gates and the police officer that the incident snowballed into an arrest, and the charges of disorderly conduct were quickly dismissed. The president, was drawn into the debate Wednesday saying at first he didn’t know all the facts but offered the personal opinion that perhaps the police in Cambridge, Mass., “acted stupidly.”

Obama has usually walked the thin line in his writings and in his political career when addressing race. But in this case he fell into the baited trap, perhaps letting his emotions get the best of him. In an effort to take heat off the arresting officer and mitigate his over reaction the president called Sgt. James Crowley on Friday afternoon. The call, which lasted about five minutes, came after police officials in Massachusetts and beyond accused Mr. Obama of maligning the character of Sergeant Crowley and the entire Cambridge police force.

“I obviously helped to contribute ratcheting it up, I wanted to make clear that in my choice of words, I think, I unfortunately, I think, gave an impression that I was maligning the Cambridge Police Department or Sergeant Crowley specifically,” Mr. Obama told reporters. “I could have calibrated those words differently, and I told this to Sergeant Crowley.”

According to the Boston Globe:

The call pleased Crowley, according to the colleague, a veteran officer who asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak publicly about the issue. Crowley told his fellow officer that he joked with the president.

“Jimmy said, ‘I’d be happy to come to the White House and sit down with you and Gates and have a beer,’ ” the veteran Cambridge officer said. “The president said he was acceptable to that.”

Crowley also asked President Obama if he could use his influence to oust the news media from his front lawn in Natick. “The president said, ‘I can’t get them off my front lawn,’ and Jimmy said, ‘Well, your lawn is a lot bigger than my lawn,’ ” the officer’s colleague said.
