John Dillinger’s Pistol Sold At Auction For Over $95,000

July 27, 2009

California (ChattahBox) – Perhaps capitalizing on the recent movie publicity, the .41 caliber Double Derringer belonging to John Dillinger, the infamous bank robber who was arrested in the 1930’s, has been sold at auction for $95,600.

The high price tag was a huge shock to experts, who had believed that the gun would sell at an already impressive $45,000, much less than the final price.

But the pistol proved to be of much more interest to collectors than expected, a consequence that may be related to the back story.  According to Reuters, it was taken off of his person during his arrest, after a police manhunt for the notorious bank robber led to his capture. It was only months before his death in July of that same year.

Idolized by some at the time as a modern-day Robin Hood, Dillinger was a dangerous criminal, who was responsible for the murder of several police officers, robbed at least two dozen banks and four police stations, and escaped from jail twice.  Director Michael Mann’s 2009 film Public Enemies, features Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis.
