Senate Panel Votes in Favor of Sotomayor – Full Chamber Vote Next Week

July 28, 2009

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court and partisan politics still prevailed.  While all 12 Democrats on the panel voted for the Bronx-raised appeals court judge, only South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham broke ranks to join committee Democrats in support of Sotomayor. The first Hispanic Supreme Court nominee will now go to the full chamber for consideration where confirmation seems assured. A Senate floor vote should happen next week, as the Democrats have a filibuster-proof 60 seats. Five moderate Republicans have said they’ll vote for Sotomayor.
