Blue Dog Dems Hedging on Sotomayor Vote Fearing NRA Backlash

July 30, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The NRA is launching a deceptive smear campaign against the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, claiming she is hostile to the Second Amendment that seems to be having an impact on some Blue Dog Democrats. As Think Progress notes, some Conservative Democrats’ votes may largely depend on how frightened they are of a backlash from the powerful NRA, if they vote yes to Sotomayor’s nomination for the Supreme Court.

Judge Sotomayor joined in a majority opinion of an unremarkable case, which applied U.S. Supreme Court precedent upholding the law that the Second Amendment doesn’t apply to the states. The NRA has twisted the case and the ruling, claiming that Sotomayor “deliberately misread Supreme Court precedent to support her incorrect view.” Using this faulty logic, the NRA announced it plans to keep an anti-gun rights score card of every lawmaker who votes yes for Sotomayor’s nomination.

In response to the NRA’s bullying tactics, two Democrats are wavering on whether they will vote yes for Sotomayor. Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) both publicly stated they are unsure about their vote. Both lawmakers hail from districts that heavily support gun rights.

Sen. Nelson said he must “convince myself she won’t be an activist.” “I need an opportunity to review a few things,” said Nelson.

Sen. Mark Begich said he remains “undecided” on his vote, although he is leaning towards a yes vote.

So far, Republicans Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Richard Lugar of Indiana, Mel Martinez of Florida, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee have come out in support of Sotomayor’s nomination, despite the fact that the lawmakers serve gun-rights districts.

Good comment, cowboy. I own two hand guns and I support all upstanding citizens of each state to be able to carry concealed weapons without the need for concealed carry licenses. I am a proud member of the Kansas State Rifle Association.
