Florida Horses Being Slaughtered May Be Being Sold As Meat

July 31, 2009

Florida (ChattahBox) – The death toll in horses has been rising in the Miami-Dade area of Florida, as seventeen show up dead and butchered for what police believe is an illegal black market horse meat scheme.

Breeding horses for meat is nothing new, although it is rare. In some countries, such as Poland, it is more common than elsewhere, but in the United States it is legal in most states to raise your own horses for consumption, as long as that meat isn’t sold.

But in Florida, police are looking into the possibility that someone, or a group of someones, is sneaking into fields and stables at night, slaughtering other people’s horses, and removing the meat from the legs and hides.

So far there have been seventeen horse deaths spread over two counties, the most recent occurring on Sunday.

“We believe that there is a fairly large and growing black market for horse meat in South Florida,” South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals president, Jeanette Jordan, told The Miami Herald.

While the implications are bad enough for the poor animals and their owners who have become victims of this possible black market ring, there are other serious risks as well.

In order for horse meat to be consumed safely, it has to follow by certain guidelines. These guidelines include what the animal eats, what chemicals it is exposed to, and other things.

Without meeting these requirements, certain chemicals and toxins build up in the horses body, and leak into the meat. This makes it unsafe for eating, and anyone who does so put themselves at extreme risk.

The Miami-Dade police may want to start their search at local hospitals that have had recent complaints of severe food poisoning pass through their emergency room.
