Pentagon Tries to Accelerate “Bunker-Buster” Bomb Deployment

August 2, 2009

(ChattahBox) — According to a new Bloomberg report, the Defense Department wants to accelerate the deployment of a new 30,000-pound “bunker-buster” bomb that is six times larger than its predecessor, by three years.  The non-nuclear, Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP, which is still being tested, is designed to destroy deeply buried nuclear, biological or chemical sites, beyond the reach of existing bombs.

It seems the main motivation for expediting the availability of these “bunker-buster” bombs on the most advanced U.S. bomber as soon as July 2010, is the growing threat that North Korea and Iran will not stop their march toward nuclear weapons, and if diplomacy fails a viable military option for taking out these complexes needs to be available. If Congress agrees to shift enough funds to the program, the bomb would be carried by the Northrop Grumman Corp radar-evading B-2 bomber, the only U.S. bomber capable of penetrating air defenses such as those believed in use by Iran and North Korea.

While diplomacy is still the first priority with both countries, the US has mandated that Iran must respond by late September to an invitation for unconditional talks on ending their strongly suspected nuclear weapons program.  Meanwhile North Korea has made some non-specific signals recently that they might be willing to engage in one-on-one talks with the US, but otherwise have continued on a provocative course of aggression.  It seems likely that one or both of these countries may continue to ignore sanctions and efforts at diplomacy, so what then?  Do we bomb their facilities to take out their nuclear programs?
