Search Resumes For Remains of Six of the Nine Killed in Midair Crash Over Hudson River

August 9, 2009

Photo: Fox News(ChattahBox) — Divers have resumed searching for the bodies of six people who perished in a midair collision over the Hudson River Saturday afternoon. A small plane with a family on board and a helicopter, carrying Italian tourists, crashed at about noon, likely killing all nine people on board. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and rescue officials said the “accident was not survivable.”

Wreckage from the collision landed as far as New Jersey. The accident which occurred in good weather, took place in a narrow corridor over the river reserved for general aviation and other aircraft operating under visual flight rules, and no requirement to communicate with air-traffic controllers.  The plane, which was a single-engine Piper PA-32R-300, had taken off earlier from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and was flying south along the river when it appeared to lose control as it banked steeply and struck the helicopter close to the shore line of Hoboken, New Jersey.  The helicopter, operated by Liberty Helicopter, the largest sightseeing and charter helicopter operator in the north-east US, had taken off moments earlier from West 30th Street in Manhattan.

Divers searching the water found one aircraft by mid-afternoon, and three bodies – two adults and a child – were recovered before search efforts were halted for the night Saturday. A third pilot had tried to warn the helicopter of the impending danger, seeing the Piper Saratoga approaching the helicopter from the rear and radioed “you have a fixed wing behind you,” but received no response.
