Eunice Kennedy Shriver has died at age 88

August 11, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Eunice Kennedy Shriver, younger sister of President John F. Kennedy has died this morning at 2 a.m. ET at the age of 88. She had been in a critical condition at Cape Cod hospital in Massachusetts since last week. Born on July 10, 1921, in Brookline, Mass., Ms Shriver was the fifth of Joseph and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy’s nine children. Devoutly religious throughout her life, she originally planned to become a nun, but married  Sargent Shriver in 1953, who served as the first director of the U.S. Peace Corps and an ambassador to France. Ms Shriver organized the first Special Olympic Games in 1968, partly inspired by her mentally disabled sister, Rosemary Kennedy. Ms Shriver is mother to TV host Maria Shriver, who is married to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. R.I.P. Eunice!

Thanks for letting us know. She was a truly wonderful woman who put her money to work for the pro-life movement and for those with disabilities. May she rest in peace.
