GOP Sen. Vitter: Destroying Canada’s Prescription Drug Program Would be Great for the U.S.

August 20, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) has a novel approach to health care reform. He believes that the re-importation of cheaper drugs from Canada into the U.S. would have the effect of destroying our neighbor’s prescription drug program, which is a major part of its nationalized health care system.

The result would be higher prices for Canadians and cheaper prices for Americans, claims Vitter.

Vitter responded to a question about his Machiavellian re-importation scheme at a recent town hall meeting. By bombarding Canada with America’s demand for cheaper prescription drugs, Vitter believes the Canadian health system would implode and collapse.

Apparently, Vitter then would do a little “death to Socialism jig” to celebrate the demise of Canada’s socialized health care, while the U.S. benefited from the country’s misfortune with lower drug prices.

Vitter explained his re-importation plan in response to the question: “If socialized medicine is such a bad idea, why do you propose we import medicine from a country that has a socialized health care system?’ I guess you’re talking about Canada, and similar places?”

“I’m for re-importation not because I want to import price controls, which Canada has, you’re right. It’s because I believe re-importation will cause the pricing system world-wide that the big drug companies exploit to collapse,” said Vitter.

Vitter explained that the Canadian “system implodes” when the U.S. piggybacks on the country’s lower drug prices.

Vitter then makes clear that his goal is to achieve lower prices for Americans, by destroying the Canadian system.

“So my ultimate goal, in terms of re-importation, is causing that system to collapse, so there’s a true, world-wide price for a drug. And that might – wouldn’t might – that would increase the cost in Canada, that would dramatically decrease the cost in the U.S.,” said Vitter.

No word yet from the Canadian government regarding its views on Vitter’s plan to destroy its prescription drug plan for its citizens.

Apparently the GOP official position is that providing affordable health care to all citizens is immoral and harmful to the windfall profits reaped by drug companies who are permitted to collude to maintain unconscionably high prices and advertise prescription drugs on broadcast media.

It would be interesting to see which large pharaceutical firms have bribed^W contributed to Vitter’s campaign coffers.

It would also be interesting to see Vitter’s reaction to the suggestion that the House and Senate health care plans, which are paid for by tax dollars, *ARE* socialist in nature, and that he is a hypocritical, cruel, racist.
