GOP Sen. De Mint: America Under Obama ‘Headed’ to Regime Like Iran

August 21, 2009

(ChattahBox)—On a stop on Sen. Jim DeMint’s (R-SC) bash President Obama tour, DeMint appeared on Hugh Hewitt’s right-wing talk radio show on Thursday, saying the U.S. under Obama was headed into totalitarianism and socialism, like the Islamic regime of Iran.

DeMint is promoting his book entitled, “Saving Freedom–We can Stop America’s Slide Into Socialism,” and likened health care reform and the federal bailouts of Wall Street and the auto industry to socialism. DeMint previously announced that the Republicans would “break” President Obama by defeating health care reform and he promised it would be Obama’s “Waterloo”

On Hewitt’s show, he described Obama’s response to his attacks, as the President picking on a “junior senator.” He then claimed that immigrants from Iran and Germany told him that the U.S. is headed into the type of totalitarian regimes of the countries that they left.

DeMint said:

“And we’ve seen a lot of countries over the years collapse when they’ve gone down the road that we’re going down. Probably the most heart-wrenching experiences I’ve had over the last several days is when naturalized American citizens who have immigrated here from Germany, Iran and other countries, they come up to me and they say why are we doing what so many have fled from? Why don’t Americans see what we’re doing? And I’ve realized that these people who’ve lived under socialist type economies, and totalitarianism, they know where we’re headed if we don’t turn things around.”

DeMint also gave an interview on Wednesday to the South Carolina newspaper, The Post and Courier where he claimed that the U.S. is working towards a single payer system, because the government is “driving the private market out of business anyway,” with Medicare and Medicaid.

DeMint also said, “I think health care is a privilege. I wouldn’t call it a right.” He claimed that he doesn’t “…like to be represented in a way that I’m trying to break the president because the whole point was to break his momentum— to stop his rampage.”

DeMint then hit on the little ole junior Senator from South Carolina meme again saying, “…but I think anytime a president is attacking a junior senator, he’s off his talking points.

In DeMint’s worldview, people in this country don’t have a “right” to receive health care and providing it amounts to taking away our freedom.

Look, DeMint, I know that the Big Lie worked for Hitler, but you Rep[ublicans already tried it for 8 years and failed miserably. Why don’t you move to Cuba, or Nigeria, where your mentality will fit right in with the ruling clique? Hey, even better! Move to Iran! You and Khomeini have a lot in common.

I am one of those naturalised US Citizens that you are talking about in this article. I have been to Europe, Asia, Middle East, and Australia. Based on what I saw in countries like Iran, they were complete socialist society and everything were unilaterally decided by government. As the time goes on and Iran faces more pressure of sanctions from West, the country leaders are more understanding how to stay in power by expanding privatization, private sector and foreign investments. At the same time as US takes more unilateral internal and foreign policies, specially in 21st century, as you said in this article it will go more and more out of competitive and growing market of 21st centurity, in which ideas such as sanctions, military, carrot and stick policy are not going to work since we are not any more living at the time of Hitler and World War II. Finally US officials should either continue to be world major super power by taking the path of Hitler or think more long term and take the updated 21st century path of China before it gets too late since according to this article it is already getting late day by day.
