Kidnapped girl turns up 18 years later – her alleged captors arrested

August 27, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A woman now 29-year-old who was abducted from a bus stop as a child 18 years ago has turned up, and a couple has been arrested in connection with the case, authorities announced today.  Jaycee Lee Dugard who disppeared as an 11-year-old blond, ponytailed child outside her South Lake Tahoe home in 1991, turned up at a California police station and was reunited with her mother who held out hope but feared her daughter might be dead.  At the time of her disappearance, a vehicle occupied by two individuals drove up to Jaycee Dugard and swept her into a car in view of her stepfather, the El Dorado County sheriff’s office said on Thursday. Despite a massive search, and being featured on the “America’s Most Wanted” television program, Dugard was not found, and investigators were unable to identify a suspect.
Police said she walked into a Northern California police station accompanied by Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, and Nancy Garrido, 55, her alleged captors. They were arrested after raising suspicion on the spot for investigation of kidnapping and conspiracy on Wednesday, police said. While it was not immediately clear how Dugard spent the 18 years since she was abducted the charges against her male capture says alot. Phillip Garrido is now being held for investigation of rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sexual penetration, said Jimmie Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department.
Phillip Garrido a registered sex offender has a conviction for rape by force or fear and was paroled from a Nevada state prison in 1999, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Update: It’s now been revealed that Jaycee had two young children with alleged kidnapper Phillip Garrido. Jaycee had changed her name to Allissa and the two children were forced to live in sheds and tents hidden in his back garden the entire time.

Sheriff Fred Kollar revealed:

“The two children turned out to be the children of Jaycee and the male suspect Garrido.
“They, along with Nancy Garrido, were living together at the house in Antioch since the kidnapping.
“A search of the residence revealed a hidden back yard within a back yard.”
