Third Cab Driver Shot To Death In New York Area, Two Related?

August 31, 2009

New York (ChattahBox) – Officials say that the third livery cab driver to be shot in the head was found this week, leading many to wonder if some of the deaths are not related.

Pericles Salas, a 32-year-old married father, was shot in the back of the head in his cab in Yonkers, police say. He was rushed to to hospital but died despite doctor’s efforts.

His killer is still at large, as is the killer of another man, 46-year-old Amadou Ndiaye, another livery driver. Ndiaye was killed in the Bronx, the motivation apparently robbery. Salas, too, had been robbed.

The third to be killed, 46-year-old Jose Peña-Segura, was reportedly unrelated to the other two. His killer, murderer-on-parole Benny Delgad, admitted that he killed Sugura as a revenge hit for a friend, who the driver had allegedly stolen drugs from. He has been officially charged.

The other two cases could be a coincidence. After all, being a cab driver can be a rather dangerous job, especially as they can often carry cash. This, and the fact that they are alone with their attackers, make them tempting targets for criminals.

“There is no safe haven for cab drivers,” livery drivers union head, Fernando Mateo, was quoted by The New York Daily News.

“They are in God’s hands every time they pick someone up and drop them off.”
