GOP Rep Jenkins Scoffs at Uninsured Mom: ‘Go be a Grown Up’

September 1, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Last month Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) revealed her racist side when she said that Republicans were waiting for a “great white hope” to defeat President Obama. Now, a video has emerged from a July town hall where, Jenkins showed her contempt and lack of compassion for her poor and uninsured constituents.

At the town hall event, a single 27-year-old uninsured mother holding her squiggly toddler son, did not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP and asked Jenkins what was wrong with a government-run plan to provide Americans like herself with health care. Jenkins snidely laughed at the earnest young woman.

The young woman, Elizabeth Smith works full time as a waitress, and wants an option that she can afford. Her 2 1/2-year-old son, Jonah has not been to a doctor in nearly two years because she can’t afford the visits. Jenkins’ response to the woman and her son: “go be a grown up.”

Read excerpts from the exchange:

“Elizabeth Smith: I’m a 27 year-old single mother. I work full-time. I do not have health insurance. My employer does not provide health insurance to me and I cannot afford it privately. Why shouldn’t my government guarantee all of its citizens health care?

Jenkins: […] then you’re the perfect example for why we need reform and why we need it now but we have to do it right and if we can do an alternative proposal, as I’m suggesting, give you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable, that’s my preference rather than to saddle the nation with yet another government program when they can’t afford the government run programs we have.

Elizabeth Smith: I want an option that I can pay for. I work. I pay my bills. I’m not a burden on the state. I pay my taxes. So why can’t I get an affordable option. Why are you against that?

Jenkins: A government run program (laugh) is going to subsidize not only yours (laugh) but everybody in this room. So I’m not sure what we’re talking about here.

Crowd: What’s wrong with that? Other audience members: It’s not our job to pay for her health care.

Jenkins […] I think we can agree we need reforms, again it’s just how we gonna do it. [laugh] I believe people should be given the opportunity to take care of themselves with an advanceable tax credit to go be a grown-up and go buy the insurance.”

Face it, the GOP is the racist party; it caters exclusively to wealthy White people (the most powerful minority in the USA) and GOP “leaders” would be quite happy to let poor people die (until they figured out that there was no one left to do necessary work, that is).

It’s time for Americans to vote all of the remaining GOP members out of office. Bring in Independents, Libertatrians, Democrats, or even Communists – ANYTHING is better than the GOP these days.

I am a Canadian who can’t believe how silly the health care debate has gotten in America. The bottomline is that health care is a individual right for every person in the industrialized world. Why can’t it be that way in America?
