Jimmy Carter Says Racism Is Behind Wilson Outburst and anti-Obama Protests

September 16, 2009

(ChattahBox) — While Rep. Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, was formally rebuked Tuesday in a House vote for shouting “You lie!” during President Barack Obama’s speech to Congress last Wednesday, a former president called the outburst as an act “based on racism” and rooted in fears of a black president. The shout seen by some as an intimidation tactic, came after the president commented that illegal aliens would be ineligible for federal subsidies to buy health insurance. Former President Jimmy Carter asked about Mr Wilson’s outburst in a meeting said at a town hall held Tuesday at his presidential center in Atlanta:
“I think it’s based on racism,” Carter said . “There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president.”

“Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care,” he said. “It’s deeper than that.”

The 84-year-old Georgia Democrat said the outburst was a part of a disturbing trend directed at the president that has included demonstrators equating Obama to Nazi leaders.

“I live in the South, and I have seen the South come a long way. But that racism inclination still exists, and I think it has bubbled up to the surface because of a belief among many white people, not just in the South but across the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country.

“It is an abominable circumstance, and grieves me and concerns me deeply.”

Tuesday’s congressional rebuke was a rare resolution of disapproval pushed through by Democrats who insisted that Wilson had violated basic rules of decorum and civility. The vote of censure was split 240:170.  Republicans characterized the measure as a witch hunt and Wilson, who had already apologized to Obama, insisted he owed the House no apology.

Mr Wilson’s eldest son Alan Wilson, an Iraq veteran who is running for state attorney general, defended his father against Mr Carter’s attack.

“There is not a racist bone in my dad’s body. He doesn’t even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won’t comment on former President Carter, because I don’t know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it’s just not in him.”

He added: “It’s unfortunate people make that jump. People can disagree – and appropriately disagree – on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it’s absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race.”

Joe Wilson has no more business holding National public office than does the salad I had last night at dinner. The salad, however, would be smart enough to not demonstrate its inherent stupidity on a nationwide broadcast.

I just think that in these times, that we are still experiencing racism…it’s just so sad that all some people see is color and not President Obama experience….it’s just so amazing that people have so much tosay now….but when former President Bush was in office (who put us in the state of affairs that the world is in) I didn’t hear as much trash talking as I’m hearing now! Racism has rears its ugly head again(not that it ever left)…and to even hear that a Pastor is even preaching hate message to his parishioners…saying God told him ” He hate Obama”…and to say that, “he want him to die and go to hell”, correct me if I’m wrong but I thought God was a loving God to all! It’s time to wake up people and stop spreading this hatred! PLEASE!

Carter is an irrelevant, bumbling old fool. Who cares what he thinks anyway? What Wilson did during Obama’s address was wrong but what evidence is there that it was based in racism? The premise is ridiculous. This reflex of calling anyone who disagrees with Obama a racist is getting old. I’m not saying that racism doesn’t exist but calling Wilson racist over this is a stretch.
