Obama Urges David Patterson To Drop NY Governor Bid?

September 20, 2009

(ChattahBox) — President Obama apparently trying to protect the Democratic party has jumped into state politics and reportedly asked Governor David Paterson to withdraw from New York ‘s 2010 governor’s race. The president’s request reported by the NY Times is supposedly prompted by fears that the unpopular and embattled New York governor would be a liability to to other Democrats running for Congress or the state Legislature next fall.
The newspaper credited two senior administration officials and a New York Democratic operative for the information, but did not name them.  The former lieutenant governor became governor in March 2008 after Gov. Eliot Spitzer was forced to resign in a prostitution scandal, is widely viewed as an ineffective leader as the state’s economic situation deteriorated, with job losses mounting and the unemployment rate rising to the highest in 26 years.  In a Quinnipiac poll last month, voters gave him an approval rating of 30%.
