Hanged Census Worker: ‘Fed’ Etched Into His Chest, ‘Apparent Homocide’

September 23, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Disturbing news is being reported by the Associated Press this evening, involving the hanging death of a federal census worker, whose body was found in a desolate wooded area near a cemetery in southeast Kentucky, with the word “fed” scrawled into the dead man’s chest.

Law enforcement officials are releasing few details surrounding the mysterious death, but a Census official was told the man’s death was “an apparent homicide.”

The FBI is investigating the death along with state police and local law enforcement. The hanged man was identified as Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time Census field worker and substitute teacher. Sparkman was a cancer survivor and single father to his son, Josh.

A passerby visiting the grave site of a family member found Sparkman’s lifeless body on Sept. 12, hanging from a tree in a clearing near Hoskins Cemetery, Arnett’s Fork in southern Clay County, located within the Daniel Boone National Forest

Co-workers from Johnson Elementary became concerned when Sparkman didn’t show up for work on Thursday, Sept 10 and contacted police after checking his home, where they found his dog Jack, but no signs of the beloved substitute teacher.

Not much is known about the circumstances of Sparkman’s mysterious death. Kentucky State Police Trooper 1st Class Don Trosper said, “At this time, the manner of death is unknown.” “Foul play has not been ruled out.”

Officials have not said what type of instrument was used to etch the word “fed” into Sparkman’s chest.

Investigators reportedly are still trying to determine whether the death was a killing or a suicide, and if a murder, whether the motive was related to anti-government sentiment. FBI spokesman David Beyer, acknowledged that the FBI was involved in the case, but offered few details.

“Our job is to determine if there was foul play involved — and that’s part of the investigation — and if there was foul play involved, whether that is related to his employment as a census worker,” said Beyer.

The Census Bureau has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, pending the outcome of the case. Despite the scant details offered by law enforcement agencies investigating the death, Census bureau officials have been told Sparkman’s death is due to foul play.

Lucindia Scurry-Johnson, assistant director of the Census Bureau’s southern office in Charlotte, N.C. said, law enforcement officers have told the agency the matter is “an apparent homicide.”

Census workers were also reportedly told that Sparkman’s truck was found nearby, with his work computer inside.

Sparkman has worked part-time for the Census Bureau since 2003, conducting about one or two interviews per month.

This is a developing story and more details involving a possible anti-government connection to Sparkman’s gruesome death should be forthcoming.

You can lay this at the feet of Glenn Beck and Orly Taitz and the Republican “leadership” who are stirring up race hatred. Now the trailer trash are figuring the Census Bureau is part of the “Black Muslim conspiracy.”

If there were an IQ test to breathe, these people would suffocate. sadly, there is no such test.

It had to be one of the left wingnuts that do this stuff and always try to pin things on the conservatives. They have done that stuff too many times, if you read anything except the old media. They do anything to try to make conservatives look guilty, most of them would anyway. The census bureau let go of Acorn, duh, just who would be upset with that. The lefties, come to mind on that one. Of course they would be upset with the census bureau. Conservatives have no problem with the census people, unless it was done by crooks like Acorn along with their corrupt political chicago maching. Not too hard to figure that one out really.

Another thing, Glenn Beck and Orly Taitz are intelligent human beings that look into corruption and shine the light on dirty cockroaches, they do a lot more investigating than any news reporter or journalist who just write what they are told to write. I am thrilled that we finally have someone to tell us what is really going on and has proof to back it all up with. Many people today don’t care to know the real truth, they are so naive, they don’t know real history and don’t have the ability to discern good from evil if it smacked them in the face. Digging for the truth is too much trouble, so they just believe any lie that comes their way, it’s easier than looking deep into where the corruption really lies at. These talk show people like Glenn Beck are better at reporting corruption going on in this nation than any news reporter. I quit watching the regular news shows because i am sick of being lied to, i knew what was going on and they were too stupid to even report on most real news. I would be ashamed to tell anyone i was a regular news reporter on ABC, NBC and the likes.

This is only a sign of things to come…the right got what they wanted. they destroyed the middle class, now they’re starting a race war while encouraging basic anarchy, that’s what’ll happen when you shrink gov’t down so small it’ll fit in a bathtub. Once the majority finally wakes up to what’s been down to them it’ll be the bankers, politicians and people like Beck and Limbaugh hanging from the trees!!

  5. Dismayed on September 24th, 2009 1:45 am

The comment by OLD MAN DOTES at 11:58pm is nothing short of incredible–but almost predictable. Blaming Glenn Beck & Orly Taitz & Republicans for the murder of a WHITE Census worker??? You, Old Man, are off your rocker. And by the way, most of the RACE BAITING that’s been going on ever since this new administration has taken office has been done by DEMOCRATS & MEMBERS OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION!

  6. John A. on September 24th, 2009 3:52 am

I put up $5.00 that says the perps are acquitted or otherwise found not guilty.

  7. Nat Hunt on September 24th, 2009 4:26 am

No, you can lay it at the feet of whoever did it. If you want to get into parceling out blame beyond the actual murderer then you’ll never be able to stop anywhere and say it was his fault, but not her fault, etc. In the end, you have to blame it all on God. But for the sake of having a workable society we prosecute the people who actually conduct the murdering.

I heard this was a meth-riddled area of Kentucky. That may or may not play into the situation.

  8. John on September 24th, 2009 5:11 am

To Old Man Dotes in particular…

    1. I’ve heard Mr Beck say several times to not do violent acts.

    2. Come on now, what the freak does race have to do with the incident in this story?

    3. It’s the Progressive Left that is stirring up the racism.

    4. Actually, it looks as if you are trying to make the connection of race based violence; Seems as though you are a Progressive trying to throw off the scent while doing so?

5 From reading your post, my take is that you might possibly fail the IQ test you talked about.

  9. claspur on September 24th, 2009 5:22 am

It’s idiots like this boob above that brings-up race, blameing everyone else about race, except the libtards that always inject race into anything they can’t defend by debate.

Just one question(rhetorical)….. how many of these government cencus-workers are members of ACORN, and the ones that aren’t are people that did-not vote for Obama?

  10. Jon Brooks on September 24th, 2009 8:52 am

    Disgruntled ACORN employee?

The hateful comments on this site are disgusting and show the low moral aptitude of the right-wing “patriots”. And Southerland needs a serious reality check when she suggests the ‘left’ would do/has done this before.

As I recall. lynching was the favorite ‘entertainment’ of all those ‘good white christians’ in the SOUTH and border states. This is NOT something the left has ever been associated with and I challenge Ms SOUTHerland to show otherwise.

  12. MikeA on September 24th, 2009 10:34 am

Wow! All of you take a timeout minute and look at what you put up on this site. Someone brutally murdered another human being, and you guys are making political hay out of it?! The facts of the case will hopefully reveal whom this sick and violent person or persons are. We can only hope this is something isolated and pray for the safety of everyone else in that community. Seems like everyone agrees on one thing – this was a horrible crime.

The victim was apparently a well-respected and kind person trying, like the rest of us, to live a decent life and make on honest living. Show a little respect for he and his family and put a sock in the political posturing. Whoever did this, no one in their right mind will claim their actions were justified – I hope! Quit vilifying your fellow Americans at the expense of his death and try to show some civility. This kind of baseless finger pointing only makes something horrific that much sadder.

My sincerest condolences to his friends and family and God’s speed to those in law enforcement

  13. Danno99 on September 24th, 2009 10:46 am

Susan, did you say that Orly Taitz is an intelligent human being?
She’s been laughed out of courts with her online masters degree!
She makes everyone look bad. She is far from intelligent!

The Democratic party were the founders of the Ku Klux Klan look it up.You people on here need to learn your history before you speak. You all look like uneducated and hateful. The two parties are the same so what are you arguing about? You should be sending your prayers to this mans family and the son he left behind. What is happening to the people of this country?

  15. Lisa G. on September 24th, 2009 11:24 am

I am in totally taken “a back”..to play the race card AGAIN, come on people isn’t it time to stop. The most rediculous comment is in the article about whether or not to rule this was “foul play?!@#” how stupid a comment, duh. I am an x census enumerator, and he was working from a list of addresses, why not let the feds, be “play” enumerators, and go retrace his steps before this horrible killing took his life, seems he made someone very angry, the questions that are requested to be answered, might offend some, surely this murder will be solved soon, .As for the rest of the browbeaters out there, why dont you open your eyes to the truth on the airwaves, Glen Beck is the best…and he works for us the people so we can see what is really going on behind the scenes.

  16. Help Getting Pregnant on September 24th, 2009 11:46 am

Anyone really believe the FBI is capable of solving this?

  17. A conservitave on September 24th, 2009 1:06 pm

Wow, what a terrible situation. I am a conservative and I take offense to you thinking that our “fringe” element is out killing people. Conservatives should and will denounce violence in any form. We are standing tall but not acting out in aggression.

I think that the “powers that be” in both the Republican and Democrat camps are pushing towards violent endings. I do believe the R and the D are one in the same. If you think that the D OR the R has your beliefs and values you are sadly mistaken.

I for one, am ok with you, even if you have a different belief system, hell I am all for us all getting along and having healthy discussion. The problem lies in the party system, debate is shut out for democrats when republicans are in office, and now that the democrats have majority, debate is shut out on republicans.

Is this really what we want? To keep feeding our broken system with lies and injustice?

What happened to by the people for the people?

Come on people, lets stop the damn fighting, and get our country back as the leader of the FREE world.

  18. americanmom on September 24th, 2009 2:16 pm

when things like shooting abortion doctors or blowing up buildings like in ok ,it is always right wing fringe who hate this country so badly they will do what ever it takes to destroy other peoples freedoms. The left will do stunts like camp out in trees so they are not cut down, but I have not heard of one time where the left has killed someone or blown up buildings to make a point. The right wing TV and radio talk show hosts stir up hate and then sit back while someone else does the dirty work. They are cowards and should be taken off the air. Most of them have never served their country and have never put themselves on the line for what they believe in. They are haters and this was a hate crime. This man did not hang himself and write the word on his own chest.

  19. dp on September 24th, 2009 3:24 pm

This is a story about a guy with an outsider’s accent walking up to a meth dealer’s house. This has nothing to do with “right-wing” media personalities because they are spinning this into anti-census sentiment as well.

  20. Mister You Know on September 24th, 2009 4:47 pm

Yeah, Glenn Beck. He’s the carnival barker who always claims to have uncovered something. I think that only the rightwing Teabaggers are capable of such stuff, fringe militia nutbags who invented this idea of death panels. Beck can talk endlessly about the now-defunct Acorn all he wants, echo chamber loop mahine he is. He has to tell his audience after he whips them into a frenzy that they should not commit acts like this, because who will be to blame for his hatred – well, he will. Sad man crybaby.

  21. Jeff on September 24th, 2009 5:59 pm

These are the people taking tax dollars on social programs that people love. I BET they are on some sort of public welfare. Taking tax dollars as they live in the shantys they call home. I say kill the perps and their hillbilly white trash children before they grow.

  22. Dude on September 24th, 2009 7:42 pm

Wake up. Political parties change…swing from being “conservative” (that is, the status quo is just fine) to being “liberal” (things need to change). Yes indeed, dig deeper into history. In the post-US Civil War 1860s, the Democrats were the racist party which were the former slave owners and some did start the KKK; the Republicans were the party of Lincoln. Fast forward 100 years, and the Democrats were the party of change (think Kennedy & Johnson) and the Republicans became the party of conservatives (Goldwater started the shift, it continued with Nixon, and reached its apex with Reagan–note that I am unequivocally NOT calling any of them racists). Bottom line, the Democratic party is not the party of the Old South (lets not forget Strom Thurmond’s Dixiecrats) anymore, nor is the Republican Party the party of Lincoln, or Eisenhower for that matter (do some research; we have the interstate highway system because of Eisenhower–a Republican).

Orly Taitz is an imbecile who should go back from where she came from.

Glen Beck & Rush Limbaugh fan the fires of rebellion, but back away from any overt action. When you incite people who are unstable (no, not all conservatives are unstable, not even most, but there are a few), you shouldn’t act surprised when they do things in your name.

Why would you show up to a place where the President is going to be with a gun? Please don’t pull the 2nd amendment bull poo with that…if I showed up to a GW Bush rally with a gun, I’d have been busted.

For all those loyal conservatives, suck it up. You lost, just like we did 8 years ago. Quit with the session talk. Shut up or put up.

Finally, the reality is that this guy probably was in the wrong place at the wrong time…stumbled on a meth lab and was murdered. No politics.

  23. scared of the righteous right on September 24th, 2009 7:59 pm

Whoever did this will get away with it in that part of the country. These are the folks who threw a professor in jail for just gathering plant samples. Law enforcement doesn’t exist there. I guess the census taker stumbled on something illegal. Meth lab or other such trash. The lucky get out of that impoverished pocket of Appalachia.

  24. Laeynn on September 24th, 2009 8:28 pm

Come on people, could we just please get over the “race” thing. It is not like any of us have just one bloodline; we are all mutts, whether we like it or not. And then, this Muslim issue about President Obama is enough already. What difference would it really make if he were Muslim? Do we all have to be the same? Did our ancestors not come here for freedom of religon? This is America we are talking about, right? The spreaders of doom and gloom would like for everybody to believe their tall tales…you know, the ones about the new world order, Muslims taking over and taking us all as prisoners, and to make it really interesting they throw in the part about The Rapture, and Armageddon, and the world ending in 2012. Were you asleep in history class? Go online, research the facts, go to your neighborhood library and research the facts. Deal only in facts and the picture will clear considerably. I live in the rural south, in Appalachia, and the people are not stupid, but they have been in deep poverty with, many times, little hope of a way out. Crystal meth and marijuana are not the best ways to try and make a better life, but if they only way you know, chances are even the most stauchly devout among us would do a little cooking and/or a little growing. How about a little bit of “Love your neighbor as youself.”

  25. Charlotte on September 26th, 2009 12:01 am

I don’t know what happened. As of now, nobody does. But I do know that making far-fetched accusations can stir up even more commotion than necessary. So until then, I think it is best to keep quiet until authorities release some more details. I love reading blogs, but as far as this story goes, I am very disappointed and shocked that some of the blogs out there have written such blatant misinformation about this.

I think the problem is that the police are not revealing anything about this incident, so naturally, albeit wrongfully, writers feel the need to fill in the gap with something to make it an interesting story. But how much of that is based on real information that the police have revealed?

How is it possible to claim that Bill Sparkman’s death is anything but murder? Is it possible that he ductaped his own legs, hands and mouth before hanging himself? Did this accidentally happen as he was trying to repair his census clipboard with ductape and he just got “tangled up” in his work? Did he just happen to be in a cemetary taking the census? Being politically correct is one thing but trying to make us believe this could be anything but murder is just rediculous! Are we so afraid of making an erroneous statement that we cover all the bases to avoid looking ignorant. It is just what it appears to be…murder! Or have the networks adopted this ploy to keep viewers looking for “further developments”? Who knows…
