McChrysal To Request 40,000 New Troops For Afghanistan

September 28, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Gen. Stanley McChrystal has requested that 40,000 more troops be sent to Afghanistan, but he is not getting the support for the action that he had hoped.

Political pressure has been heavy for McChrystal, but he is unconcerned, saying that he has been put into his position to do a job, and that is what he intends to do.

Though the first 21,000 troops authorized by president Obama at the beginning of the year are still being deployed, he believes that in order to undo damage done in the region in the last eight years, more troops are needed.

“There’s an awful lot of bad habits we’ve got to deprogram,” he was quoted as saying.

“We could do good thing in Afghanistan for the next 100 years and fail, because we’re doing a lot of good things, and it just doesn’t add up to success.”

Obama has been reluctant to authorize any more troops at this time, but McChrystal is expected to put forward his recommendation for an additional 40,000 over the next several months.

If the U.S. and Israel get behing a Central Asian Union consisting of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikstan, Turkmenistan, Krgyzstan and Uzbekistan the problem would be solved. A union like this modeled after the European Union would give Iran another buffer on its backdoor. A buffer that would be supported by Russai, China and the U.S. It would also show that Israel is committed to peace in the region overall.
