Obama heads to Copenhagen to Pitch Chicago for 2016 Summer Olympics

September 28, 2009

(ChattahBox) — President Obama and wife Michelle will fly to Copenhagen, Denmark on Thursday to support efforts to land the 2016 summer Olympics for his adopted hometown of Chicago, the White House said Monday.  Obama and the First Lady recently wrote to a number of IOC members, promising that Chicago would provide a “spectacular Olympic experience for one and all”. If successful, Chicago whose bid includes plans to make extensive use of the city’s parks, with Lake Michigan serving as the setting for many of the water events, would be the first US city to host the Summer Olympics since Atlanta in 1996. First Lady Michelle Obama leads the US official delegation, which includes talk show star Oprah Winfrey. The Windy City faces stiff competition from the other finalist cities, which include Madrid, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro, with observers seeing this as one of the closest competitions ever, and no clear front runner. Each of the cities will make a presentation on Friday in the Danish capital to the IOC’s 115 members, who will then cast their votes the same day.
