Sleeping Bag Parties, ‘Lil Wayne, For Legislator Pep-Ups

October 3, 2009

California (ChattahBox) – California state legislatures are notorious for their bipartisan arguments and lack of agreement on bills. So, with a two-thirds majority needed to pass everything from a bill to a budget, how do they get things done. One word: sleepovers.

There have so far been six all-nighters pulled this year by the Cali statehouse, which most agree is a heavy number for any house.

How do they manage stay awake long enough to hash out the details of dull, monotonous, or just massive spending budgets? Different people have different ways, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Apparently, Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Barbara) blasts ‘Lil Wayne on his iPod to stay pumped up. Others bring sleeping bags and try to get in quick catnaps in between votes. Staffers play games where they flip pennies into the crown of Queen Isabella of Spain’s statue, and there are commonly sing-a-longs.

“Legislators are like students and taxpayers,” Maldonado was quoted as saying.

“Anything that they can put off, they put off. It’s the same human psychology that leads thousands of people to line up outside the post office on April 15.”
