Ranger Saws Off Bull Elk’s Antlers In Common Method Of Curbing Aggression

October 7, 2009

Colorado (ChattahBox) – Estes Park rangers have had their hands full this season, as elk become more aggressive, goring cars, running at people, and showing up all over the city. How do they deal with it? Using the tactic of humiliation.

Rick Spowardt was called by a golf course manager who said an aggressive bull elk had gored a car, and was chasing customers away from the greens.

When Spowardt checked it out, he took along with tranquilizer gun and a saw, drugged the elk, and sawed off his antlers.

“I felt sorry for him, but I think it was preferable than him injuring somebody or worse,” the ranger was quoted in an interview with 9News.com.

The practice is allegedly a common one in the area, as more elk wander into populated areas and refuse to leave, often causing a great deal of damage in the meantime.
