GOP Candidate Shoots at Target With Opponent’s Initials, a Mother and Cancer Survivor

October 11, 2009

(ChattahBox)—In the latest example of Republicans’ embracing and extolling hate and violence, the Florida-based Southeast Broward Republican Club, held a shoot-out event for its members at a local gun club last week to “…send a political message.” Among the attendees, was Robert Lowry, who is running as the GOP congressional contender to try to unseat Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida.

The GOP cowboy/soldier wannabes were handed assault rifles and handguns to shoot at targets, including cutouts of a Muslim holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and a large silhouette with “DWS” written next to its head, representing the initials of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Lowry gunned down the target with his opponent’s initials, riddling it with bullet holes and kill shots, as a “joke.”

When the incident was first reported by the Associated Press, Lowry first dismissed the gunning down of a target with his opponent’s initials on it, as just a “joke,” but quickly changed his tune amid heavy criticism and later said it was a “mistake.”

Other conservatives refused to apologize for the event saying they need to stand up for their beliefs in the heavily Democratic county.

Club president Ed Napolitano described the shoot-out event, as a way to have fun and at the same time make some sort of warped political statement. “The aims were to have fun, educate club members who were new to shooting — and send a political message,” said Napolitano.

Well, I think Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a cancer survivor and mother of three elementary school children, received the message loud and clear.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement condemning Lowry’s repugnant and violent behavior:

“There is nothing light or funny about pretending to shoot someone. At a time in our country when people are bringing guns to Town Hall Meetings and a preacher is calling for the death of our President, I find this type of action serious and disturbing. Tonight I am going to have to talk to my young children about why someone is pretending to shoot their mother. Trivializing violent behavior is the kind of extreme view that has no place in American politics,” said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

DSCC spokesman Ryan Rudominer condemned the violence and sexism of the shoot-out event: “It’s exactly this extremist and sexist behavior from the Republican Party of No that has redefined what it means to be outdated and out-of-touch.”

Best that dems don’t overdo the condemnations as people are what they are. Let the repubs “hang” themselves some more with their warmongering and wall street greedy efforts continuing. (Note: to dems who are closet repubs, time to get out of the closet.)
