Finance Committee Health Care Bill Faces Key Vote Today

October 13, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The Senate Finance Committee is poised to vote on Chairman Max Baucus’s health-care bill, which hopes to revamp the nation’s $2.6 trillion health care system by cutting healthcare costs, regulate insurers and expand coverage at a meeting today starting at 10 a.m. EDT . With a 13-to-10 seat advantage, the Democrats are expected to pass the bill, though it remains to be seen whether Republican Olympia Snowe will become the first Senate Republican to vote for it. Snowe’s support could give Democrats a crucial swing vote as they try to hold the 60 Senate votes needed to overcome procedural roadblocks. A last ditch attack by America’s Health Insurance Plans, an industry consortium, issued a study Monday that said the committee’s bill will increase the cost of family coverage by $1,700 a year in 2013, when the bill takes full effect.  The White House quickly dismissed the report. “This is an insurance industry study that is designed to benefit the insurance industry,” White House spokeswoman Linda Douglass said on CNN.

If approved as expected, the bill would be merged with the Senate Health Committee’s version over the next few weeks and moved to the full Senate if the conflict between the two chambers over the “Cadillac” tax on high-cost plans in the Finance Committee’s bill can be resolved. The finance panel’s bill also proposes a system of member-run health care cooperatives, while the  Senate’s health committee bill calls for a government-run plan. The eventual floor battle with Republicans who see health care legislation as too costly and a heavy-handed government intrusion and will try to filibuster, which means the Dems may need all 60 members of the caucus to get this bill passed.

What makes us think that the government can run health care when they can’t even deliver a letter without running a deficit?

Snowe has proven herself to be a great lawmaker today for not kowtowing to the Republicans and to the healthcare industry.

I congratulate her for having a spine and for putting the American people ahead of her party.
