October 16, 2009

(ChattahBox) — At a town hall event during his first visit to hurricane-ravaged New Orleans as president, President Obama took a question from a brave fourth-grader named Tyren Scott who bluntly wanted to know, “Why do people hate you?”

“They’re supposed to love you,” And God is love,” Tyren, from Paulina, Louisiana continued.

After the crowd swooned, Obama responded in a way to try to encourage the boy take criticism of him with “a grain of salt.”

Obama said:  “I did get elected president, so not everybody hates me now… I got a whole lot of votes.”

“If you were watching TV lately, it seems like everybody’s just getting mad all the time. And you know, I think that you’ve got to take it with a grain of salt. Some of it is just what’s called politics.”

“People just, I think they’re worried about their own lives,” including losing their jobs and homes due to the recession, he said. “They’re feeling frustrated, and when you’re the president of the United States you’ve gotta deal with all that…that’s right,” he said to applause and laughter.

“When things are tough, you’re gonna get some of the blame,” Obama said. But, he added, “I’m a tough guy. Are you a tough guy? You look pretty tough.”
