Poll: Republican Favorable Rating Lowest Since 1998

October 23, 2009

(ChattahBox)–A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released on Friday provides some unwelcome news for the shrinking Republican Party. According to the results, only 36 percent of people polled view the Republicans positively with an astounding majority of 54 percent holding an unfavorable view.

The low favorable number is the lowest it has been in over a decade, since 1998, when their numbers had sunk to 31 percent favorable and 57 percent unfavorable.

However, the Democratic Party continues to enjoy high favorable numbers. Among those polled, 53 percent held favorable views of the Democrats with 41 percent expressing a negative response.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland explained the GOP’s low favorable ratings, as a result of a negative and lasting impression from the failed Bush presidency and Republican obstructionism towards the Obama administration.

“The Republican party may still be battling the legacy left to them by George W. Bush. They have also spent a lot of time in 2009 working against Democratic proposals. That hasn’t left them a lot of time so far this year to present a positive, post-Bush message. Of course, there is still plenty of time for them to do so before the 2010 midterms,” said Holland.

All is not well for Democrats in Congress however, despite the party as a whole enjoying positive support. Nearly seven in ten people polled say they disapprove of how Congress is handling its job, with only 29 percent saying they approve.

A slightly higher number of people questioned expressed positive views towards Democratic Congressional leaders compared to Republican leaders. Asked of half of those polled, only 33 percent approve of Congressional Republicans, while 38 percent approve of Democratic lawmakers.

What these results mean for the upcoming 2010 elections, is hard to predict, but the shrinking favorable numbers for Republicans will not help them take Congressional seats from Democrats, if these numbers hold.

On the other hand, the across the board low favorable ratings for lawmakers may certainly effect the ability of some weaker Democratic lawmakers to hold on to their seats.

The CNN poll was conducted October 16-18, with 1,038 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points. The entire poll can be found here.

Whats interesting is they still are able to influence policy as if they had public opinion on their side – pretty much proving how weak democrats are as they cant get anything done with majority support.
