Sen. Harkin: Lieberman Keeps Chairmanship at Democrats’ ‘Indulgence’

October 30, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), chairman of the powerful Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee issued a not too subtle warning to Sen. Joe Lieberman’s (ID-CT) latest antics, threatening to side with the Republicans to filibuster health care reform. Harkin essentially warned that Lieberman retains his position, as chairman of the Homeland Security committee, because of the Democrats’ good graces and it could just as easily be snatched away.

Sen. Harkin issued the following statement:

“[Lieberman] still wants to be a part of the Democratic Party although he is a registered independent. He wants to caucus with us and, of course, he enjoys his chairmanship of the [Homeland Security] committee because of the indulgence of the Democratic Caucus. So, I’m sure all of those things will cross his mind before the final vote,” said Harkin.

Lieberman however, seems undeterred and with good reason. Despite his campaigning for Sen. McCain during the presidential election and speaking out in opposition to Democratic candidate Barack Obama during the Republican National Convention, Majority Leader Harry Reid still welcomed Lieberman back into the fold and allowed him to retain his committee assignments, providing he would caucus with Democrats.

To add further insult to injury, Lieberman told ABC News yesterday that he would campaign for Republican candidates next year. “I probably will support some Republican candidates for Congress or Senate in the elections in 2010. I’m going to call them as I see them,” said Lieberman.

Lieberman also remained coy, as to whether he would run for reelection in 2012, as a Democrat or a Republican saying, it remains an “open question.”

Steve Benen of Washington Monthly’s Political Animal perfectly described the “indulgence” made available to Lieberman that should have run its course some time ago:

“So, taken together, Lieberman is threatening to help Republicans block a vote on health care reform, prepared to help Republican candidates in the midterms, and using his committee gavel to lend credence to Republican attacks against the White House, all after promoting the Republican presidential candidate last year. Democrats are prepared to let him stay on as the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee? To use Harkin’s word, that’s quite an “indulgence,” wrote Benen.

It’s time for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to withdraw Democratic “indulgences” from “Holy Joe” Lieberman.
