Questions Arising Over Teenage Life-Without-Parole Sentences

November 2, 2009

U.S. (ChattahBox) – Alternet had an interesting story today, speaking about the case of a 16-year-old girl who killed her abusive pimp, and will now die in prison.

Sara Kruzan was only 11 when she met GG, a man three times her age. He began taking her and her friends out, buying her gifts, and giving her a shoulder to cry on.

Sara lapped up the attention of the predator, who had singled her out for a reason. Her mother was an abusive drug addict, she barely knew who her father was. She was ripe for manipulation.

When she was 13, GG began to speak to her about sex, and about how she could get money for it. A few weeks later, he raped her.

“He uses his manhood to hurt,” the now 16-year-old Sarah explained.

“Like, break you in. I guess.”

She worked for him for three years as a prostitute, dealing with his abuse, and the horrible lifestyle he had groomed her for.

One night, she snapped, and killed GG. A judge gave her life in prison, without the hope of parole.

It is one of only many stories of teenagers that have been given life sentences for crimes committed in their youth.

A bill was once introduced by California State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), who is also a child psychologist. to have this type of case thrown out for life sentences. Political pressure saw it crushed quickly.

“Children have a greater capacity for rehabilitation than adults,” Yee said.

But, he reintroduced a new bill in February, which will allow offenders in California who are under 20 at the tie of their arrest have their sentences reviews in ten years. It is a big steps for the state that has so many flaws in it’s prison system.

But it raises the question of other hard lines taken by Legislators, such as the three strikes law, which has created an enormous crisis of over population in the regions prisons.
