GOP Wins Both Governor Races; Democrat wins in N.Y. 23

November 4, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Republicans swept Tuesday’s gubernatorial races, giving the GOP a lift and offering warning signs to Democrats ahead of the 2010 midterm elections. Former Virginia Attorney General Republican¬† Bob McDonnell won big in Virginia taking 59% of the vote compared to Democrat R. Creigh Deeds’ 41%, in nearly final returns.

Chris Christie at 49% squeaked past incumbent Jon Corzine 45% in New Jersey. The New Jersey loss is seen as a big blow for Democrats, which has had Democratic governors for the past eight years and last year, for the first time in 44 years, went blue to elect Barack Obama. President Obama had campaigned heavily for Corzine, but the Democrat succumbed to low approval ratings and an electorate frustrated with high property taxes and New Jersey’s persistent political corruption.

Pundits speculated that a Republican gubernatorial sweep could indicate dissatisfaction with the administration in Washington, but exit polls seemed to indicate that voting reflected feelings about the economy, not Obama. Exit polls showed that 89 percent of voters in New Jersey, and 85 percent in Virginia, were “very” worried about the economy for the upcoming year.¬† Democrats could take some solace in Tuesday’s results, as the party swiped a traditionally Republican House seat in the far north of New York’s 23rd congressional district.¬† Democrat Bill Owens faced off against Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in a contest that attracted the interest of national conservative leaders including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who endorsed Hoffman early in the race.
