Missing Baby Found Alive Under Babysitter’s Bed After 5 Days

November 5, 2009

Florida (ChattahBox) – A child that was reported missing five days earlier has been found, hidden under her babysitter’s bed. The babysitter, her husband, and the infant’s mother have been arrested in connection to the case.

Shannon Dedrick, the 7-month-old baby, had been on child service’s list since her birth, when two weeks later it was reported that she may have been abused.

Investigators looked into the claim, and were at the parent’s home frequently from August to the end of September. They reported that the parents were habitual marijuana smokers, and had a messy home, but otherwise Shannon was well cared for. Physician reports verified this.

Then, last week, the police were notified that the infant had disappeared. A five day intensive search on the area began, and ended this morning when police searched the home of the child’s babysitter, Susan Elizabeth Baker.

Shannon had been hidden in a small box, surrounded by items meant to hide her. She was alive and healthy.

“Statistically speaking this should not have ever happened, that we found this child alive, especially after so many days. Time was against us,” Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock said.

“It was very emotional for us, because once we got her to the hospital, we called our wives and every one of us was crying. Grown men crying. It’s just such a relief. We’ve had missing children cases in the past, but nothing like this.”

But the case gets stranger. Now Baker and her husband have been involved in a similar case in the past.

In 1987, their three-year-old son disappeared. Police did a massive search, but nothing was ever found. The boy had vanished.

When they searched the couple’s home, they found that their six year old daughter had been severely beaten. Open sores covered her back, and her hands were broken.

Baker was charged with assault with intent to murder, but she was never indicted on charges in her son’s disappearance. To this day, no one knows what happened.

Shannon has been taken into state custody as this current incident is investigated, and the Bakers, as well as the child’s mother, are facing unknown charges. Police are not saying if the girl’s father was involved.
