Lawsuit: KBR Poisoned Soldiers Burning Toxic Waste and Corpses

November 9, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The defense contracting company KBR, a former subsidiary of Halliburton is being sued by military personnel and civilian contractors in a class action lawsuit, alleging that the company poisoned them by burning piles of toxic waste in open-air burn pits. The plaintiffs claim KBR did a end-run around proper toxic waste disposal procedures to save money, with blatant disregard for their health, as thick putrid smoke polluted the air.

The plaintiffs claim the toxic waste caused wide-ranging and long lasting health problems, including chronic asthma, chronic coughing, breathing problems, kidney disease and cancer.

The lawsuit “claims at least 100,000 people were endangered by the contractors’ ‘utter indifference to and conscious disregard’ of troops’ welfare.”

According to one of the lawsuits, KBR burned both toxic chemicals, as well as biohazard materials and even human corpses in the open-air burn pits:

KBR burned “tires, lithium batteries … biohazard materials (including human corpses), medical supplies (including those used during smallpox inoculations), paints, solvents, asbestos insulation, items containing pesticides, polyvinyl chloride pipes, animal carcasses, dangerous chemicals, and hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles.”

At times the smoke became so thick and noxious the plaintiffs claim, that it “reduced visibility to only a few yards,” and the “flames were often colored blue or green from the burning chemicals.”

The noxious burn pits were often placed near soldiers and contractors’ living quarters filling their housing with carcinogenic smoke and haze.

The burn pits are still in use at the Balad Airbase, the largest base in Iraq.

KBR responded to the suits by pointing the finger at the military, claiming the Army chose the burn pit sites and “that the Army decides when to fund an incinerator and when to burn waste in the open air.”

Clearly your report is outdated as the burn pits in operation at 1 October 09 and all trash is incinerated or buried.
