GOP Rep Shadegg: NY Mayor’s Daughter Could be ‘Kidnapped at School by a Terrorist’

November 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The shameful and hypocritical fear mongering by Republicans over Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to try 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a federal court in New York, reached a new low last night. Right-wing lawmaker Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) rose to speak on the House floor to offensively suggest that a NY terrorism trial would lead to a situation of terrorists gone wild, unleashed on the Big Apple, kidnapping Mayor Bloomberg’s daughter and family members of other city officials. Shame on you Rep. Shadegg.

Shadegg’s buffoonery was last on display during the debate on the House health care reform bill, when he used an aide’s baby as a prop, speaking on her behalf saying, the baby was opposed to health care reform. It was thought to be impossible to top such an absurd display by a Congressional lawmaker, but Shadegg succeeded with his latest clownish rant opposing civil trials of 9/11 terror suspects.

The Arizona Congressman not only made a fool of himself once again, but he also engaged in despicable personalized scare tactics, using made up scenarios involving Mayor Bloomberg’s own daughter.

Shadegg, like many Republicans have joined a growing chorus condemning our juducial system, claiming it is not up to the task of holding trials of terror suspects, despite the fact that 145 terror suspects have already been successfully tried in our federal courts.

Shadegg then attacked Mayor Bloomberg’s support of the trials of 9/11 suspects in his city:

SHADEGG: “I saw the Mayor of New York said today, ‘We’re tough. We can do it,'” the Republican congressman said. “Well, Mayor, how are you going to feel when it’s your daughter that’s kidnapped at school by a terrorist? How are you going to feel when it’s some clerk — some innocent clerk of the court — whose daughter or son is kidnapped? Or the jailer’s little brother or little sister?”

Steve Benen of Washington Monthly’s Political Animal described Shadegg’s hypocrisy best:

“And while I’m hesitant to offer any kind of substantive response to such transparent nonsense, I can’t help but wonder, where has John Shadegg been? Why didn’t he pop off like this during any of the other criminal trials against the hundreds of terrorists who’ve been put through the federal justice system? If this right-wing lawmaker seriously believes court proceedings lead foreign terrorists to kidnap children on American soil, why has Shadegg remained entirely silent on the point over the last couple of decades?”
