Massive Crib Recall May Lead To Banning Drop-Down Sides

November 23, 2009

U.S. (ChattahBox) – With more and more crib recalls being issued on cribs that have drop-down sides, a federal mandate may be proposed that would ban the creation and sale of such items in the United States.

The problem has been a well known one by many for years; infants can get their heads stuck between the first bar and headboard more easily than some parents might think, leading to strangulation.

It is only one of many risks attributed to cribs that have levered sides that drop down to allow parents to more easily retrieve and put down their infants.

“That’s every parent’s safe-haven for their child, and to see the horrific site of him strangled … was just horrifying to me. I just fell to my knees and I started screaming.”

That is the horrific statement made by one mother, Michele Witte, who found her 10 month old son dead with his head between the bars.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is now recalling the largest number of cribs in U.S. history, as well as pushing for legislation that would ban the sale of any cribs with drop-down sides, as well as force companies to use better hardware.

Many companies use substandard hardware in the production of cribs and other infant gear.

“We have been relying on voluntary standards. We find that is no longer enough. We will now be writing federal regulations that are mandatory for cribs,” CPSC chairman, Inez Tenenbaum, was quoted by CBS.

You can check to see if your crib has so far been recalled by checking out the CPSC website. To find if your crib may be unsafe, try shaking the rails. If it moves back and forth, you may be running the risk of a crib with faulty hardware.
