NRC says radiation leak at Three Mile Island non risk situation

November 23, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A new radiation leak at Three Mile Island, the site of the worst nuclear accident in US history, sent a brief scare this weekend.  An airborne radiological contamination alarm sounded about 4 p.m on Saturday. About 150 employees were sent home Saturday afternoon, but officials say there is no public health risk.  Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) commission sent investigators to the central Pennsylvania plant, but specialist John White has told ABC News that there is no indication that radiation at the plant exceeded or even approached regulatory limits. Tests showed the contamination was confined to surfaces inside the building, and workers were being tested for exposure. Three Mile Island has been shut down since October 26 for refueling, maintenance and steam generator replacement, the company said.

Officials said the first leak at the 3-Mile Island several years ago was not significant and it turned out to be one of the worst in our nation’s history. Should we really believe the NRC this time?
