Chinese Drywall Linked to Health Problems, Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Vapors

November 24, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is launching an expanded investigation into dangerous drywall imported from China, which has been linked to multiple health problems. The contaminated drywall has been shown to give off fumes of hydrogen sulfide gas, causing harmful indoor pollution in homes where the drywall is used.

In addition to health problems, the drywall has been connected to corrosion of electrical components, causing safety issues. After a study of 35 homes using Chinese drywall, with comparisons to homes without the Chinese product, the CPSF now has established a baseline to continue its investigation. Consumer Product Safety Commission chairman Inez Tenenbaum said, “We now have the science that enables the Task Force to move ahead to the next phase — to develop both a screening process and effective remediation methods.”

The CPSF is joining with multiple federal and state agencies to identify the exact substances in the Chinese drywall and to take steps to warn consumers. The investigation will also recommend solutions to homeowners with the contaminated drywall in their homes.

The drywall was used in the rebuilding effort in Southern states, after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

Federal and state officials have received at least 2,000 complaints about the Chinese drywall, reporting on health issues and the corrosion of electrical components.

Federal officials are treating the contaminated Chinese drywall, as a serious public health and safety issue.

“This is a complicated investigation and the data must be evaluated before conclusions are made; nonetheless, the agencies and states involved share a sense of urgency in informing the public of their findings and developing safe and effective solutions,” said the CPSC in a statement.

The CPSC has just determined that Chinese drywall is linked to metal corrosion in homes. People with Chinese drywall manufactured by Knauf Plasterboard Co. have until Dec. 2 to join a lawsuit against the company. Rather than go through a lengthy legal process, join this lawsuit very easily. The following Web site will give you everything you need and help you file a claim and get some closure on this difficult and costly time:
