WH Security Breach Raises Questions: How Safe is our President?

November 27, 2009

(ChattahBox)—- Michaele and Tareq Salahi, the media hungry socialite couple who gate-crashed President Obama’s first state dinner Tuesday night, have exposed alarming flaws in White House security. The couple were not on the guest list, but somehow made it through a Secret Service checkpoint and were allowed to enter the dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. With threats against President Obama soaring nearly 400 percent, since he took office, the effectiveness of the current Secret Service protection is being called into question.

The breakdown in security apparently occurred at one checkpoint. But the party-crashing couple from Virginia did go through metal detectors, before entering the dinner. “It appears that proper procedures were not followed,” said Secret Service spokesperson, Ed Donovan.

The couple, who are promoting themselves for a gig on Bravo’s new reality show, “Real Housewives of D.C.,” posted photos on Facebook taken at the dinner. The photos show the Salahis posing with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, CBS anchor Katie Couric, Vice President Biden and three Marines in dress blue uniforms.

Although the couple’s lawyer claim his clients didn’t gate-crash, the Secret Service is preparing to file criminal charges against the couple, according to Secret Service spokesman Jim Mackin.

Donovan does not believe the President was in any danger, because the President, Vice President and other dignitaries were protected by their “usual complement” of Secret Service guards. “In that regard, everything worked the way it’s supposed to work,” said Donovan.

However, critics like conservative author Ronald Kessler are saying, the party-crashers could have carried a dangerous chemical agent, such as Anthrax into the White House. “It’s clear from the Secret Service’s comment that the agency not only ignored the fact that the couple was not on the guest list but also did not do the usual background check to ensure that they were not possible threats,” said Ronald Kessler, author of “The President’s Secret Service.”

Kessler attributes the breakdown in security to the Secret Service “cutting corners,” since the agency was swallowed up by Homeland Security. “There absolutely could have been an assassination” at the state dinner on Tuesday, said Kessler.

It’s not clear how close the couple came to the President. And luckily, in this instance the gate-crashers were motivated only by fame. But the security breakdown should trigger an investigation of security procedures and a tightening of White House security measures, to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Update: We know now that the Salahi’s did in fact get close and personal with the president.
