Senator Max Baucus Discloses He Nominated Girlfriend for U.S. Attorney

December 5, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Senator Max Baucus is taking some heat after a spokesman disclosed he was in a romantic relationship with a woman he nominated for U.S. attorney. The Montana Democrat who is the chairman of the powerful  Senate Finance Committee  was romantically involved with Melodee Hanes, his state director, when he recommended that the White House consider her and two other names for the U.S. attorney post her earlier this year to become the next U.S. attorney for Montana.
Baucus spokesman, Tyler Matsdorf, said said Ms. Hanes was recommended for the United States attorney position solely on the basis of her credentials, but withdrew in consideration of their romance:

Baucus and Ms. Hanes then decided that she should withdraw her name from consideration because the couple wanted to live together in Washington, Mr. Matsdorf said.

Baucus was separated with his wife at the time when the two began their involvement in the summer of 2008, according to Matsdorf, and now the two are divorced from their spouses and live together on Capitol Hill.

“Senator Baucus is currently in a mature and happy relationship with Melodee Hanes,” Mr. Matsdorf said in a statement. “They are both divorced, and in no way was their relationship the cause of their respective divorces.”

President Obama eventually nominated Michael Cotter, a lawyer from Helena, Mont., who is still awaiting confirmation. Hanes eventually took a job with the Department of Justice earlier this year, in its office of juvenile justice and delinquency prevention.
