Biden on Lieberman’s Threats: If Holy Joe ‘Scuttles’ Health Bill, Won’t ‘Have Friend in the Lord’

December 15, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Vice President Joe Biden made an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Tuesday and the subject of Sen. Joe Lieberman’s (I-CT) treachery and flip-flopping on Medicare expansion was brought up. Program host and former Congressman Joe Scarborough, asked Biden: If Lieberman was a good guy? Biden responded chuckling, “Say it ain’t so Joe,” “Joe is a good guy BUT,” Joe Lieberman’s vow to filibuster with Republicans to kill the bill is “wrong.” And the long-time Congressional pol cautioned Holy Joe Lieberman and other self-serving Democrats who intend to “scuttle” health care reform, suggesting the wrath of God would come down upon them.

Scarborough asked Biden if he thought Lieberman was getting revenge against Democrats for supporting Ned Lamont, his Democratic primary opponent in his 2006 reelection. Biden responded that “honest to god” he didn’t know what was up with Lieberman, but didn’t want to question Joe’s motives, only his judgement. “I think Joe’s Judgement is wrong on this,” Biden added.

Biden attributed much of Lieberman’s threats, to calculated gamesmanship. “A great big bill comes up and everybody figures their maximum point of leverage is right before the deal is made. So you’ve got everybody lining up out there saying, ‘If I’m just willing to hold out now I’ll get everything I want,'” said Biden.

The gregarious Vice President brushed off Lieberman’s flip-flopping on Medicare expansion, saying “If we held flip flops against everybody in the Congress we probably wouldn’t have many people there.”

“I’m confident Joe is going to see the light” and vote for the final bill,” he said.

Biden then issued his warning to the deal-making Democrats not to overplay their hands when it comes to Jesus:

“There’s an awful lot of gamesmanship going on right now…” Biden said. “Any Democrat who decides for their own shallow purposes, if that were the case, to scuttle this is, you know in the Southern parts of our states Joe, is not going to have a friend in the lord. You know what I mean? [laughter]
