Major Recall of Infant Car Seat Carriers Made in China

December 19, 2009

(ChattahBox)—A major recall of infant carrier seats was issued on Friday, by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Dorel Juvenile Group. The manufacturer of baby products issued the voluntary recall of about 447,000 infant carrier car seats under the brands, Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Disney. The infant seats have a dangerous defect in the carrying handle, which can come loose exposing infants to a fall. So far, at least 77 instances have been reported of the handle loosening or becoming completely dislodged from the carrier. Three babies have been reported injured, suffering from bumps, bruises and a head injury.

The government agencies advised consumers to immediately stop using the seat’s carrying handle. The bolts that attach the handle to the seat can loosen, causing the handle to separate and creating a fall hazard for babies.

The infant seat is still safe to use as a car seat. The infant seats were sold nationwide from January 2008 through this month.

Patty Davis, a spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned parents not to use the handle on the seat, until they obtained a free repair kit.”You don’t want to take a chance by using this recalled car seat carrier, until you have the repair kit in place,” said Davis.

A repair kit can be obtained by contacting Dorel at 866-762-3316 or by visiting the company’s website at

There are so many recalls in the baby product industry of late that we can only hope that this strengthens safety regulations used by manufacturers. The consumer should also be aware of what they are buying prior to purchase. Make sure that your item abides by the latest safety guidelines and appropriate certifications. Doing do diligence as a consumer is always a wise approach to avoid buyer’s remorse or dissapointment with a defective product.
