Obama Taps Transgender Woman to Commerce Dept

January 4, 2010

(ChattahBox)—President Obama has appointed a transgender woman to serve in the Commerce Department. Amanda Simpson, a former test pilot, transitioned from male to female while serving as Deputy Director in Advanced Technology Development for Raytheon.

Simpson of Tuscon, Arizona will take up the post of Senior Technical Adviser to the Commerce Department. Simpson is active in LGBT issues and is honored to serve as an example for the community:

“I’m truly honored to have received this appointment and am eager and excited about this opportunity that is before me,” Simpson said. “As one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others.”

Simpson has worked in the aerospace and defense industry for the past 30 years, primarily as a rocket scientist. She was voted the 2004 YWCA “Woman On The Move.”

Omega, she is highly qualified for her job. Are you implying that her trans gender history some how makes her unqualified despite her impressive resume?

I’m glad the administration can look beyond such irrelevancies and pick the best person for the job. It seems that the what next is picking people by qualifications not ideology.
