Is Journalism Dead? Poll Finds Fox News Most Trusted Name in News

January 27, 2010

(ChattahBox)—-Is Journalism dead in America? A new Public Policy Poll found that a majority of Americans trusted Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News network to provide them with the most unbiased reporting. Since Fox News is an unabashed conservative propaganda outlet that serves as a media arm of the GOP, the results of this poll are quite puzzling and disturbing. What does it mean that 49 percent of the people polled trust Fox News? Are people really that stupid? Has Rupert Murdoch’s right-wing media empire distorted reality to such an extent that Americans can no longer distinguish truth from fiction? Has the steady drumbeat of distortion, misinformation and conspiracy theory laden fear-mongering emanating from Fox News contributors, like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity actually destroyed viewers’ cognitive functions? Maybe Beck, Hannity, O’Reilly and the dim anchors on Fox and Friends are sending out secretly coded subliminal mind rays that destroy viewers’ brain stems? All of these questions and more, need to be answered if journalism is to be saved.

Apparently we all now live in a media Bizarro World of opposites, where up is down, down is up and where Americans believe that a right-wing “news” network is “the most trusted name in news.” Despite Fox News false claim of being “fair and balanced,” even Fox News’ Senior Vice President for Programming, Bill Shine, admitted that the network is aiming to be “the voice of opposition” to the Obama administration.

According to the Public Policy poll, Fox News came out on top as the only network that a majority of people trust more than they distrust. CNN was second followed by NBC, CBS and ABC News at dead last. The poll found that 49 percent trust Fox news, while 37 percent do not. Along party lines there is a huge split, with a whopping 74 percent of Republicans trusting Fox News, with only 30 percent of Democrats trusting the veracity of Fox News reporting.

CNN came in second behind Fox News, because it was viewed as trustworthy by 39 percent of Democrats, Republicans and Independents, but 41 percent have no faith in the cable news network. Broken down by party, 59 percent of Democrats, 23 percent of Republicans and 33 percent of Independents trust CNN.

A majority of Democrats as a group, trusted all of the major news outlets, but only 20 percent of Republicans have faith in the mainstream media outlets of NBC, ABC and ABC. Independents as a group, showed a distrust of every single news outlet included in the poll.

Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling noted the seismic shift in journalism, with a majority of Americans wanting to avoid reality and be bombarded with populist memes and propaganda that they agree with. “A generation ago you would have expected Americans to place their trust in the most neutral and unbiased conveyors of news,” said Debnam “But the media landscape has really changed and now they’re turning more toward the outlets that tell them what they want to hear.”

Maybe the problem is the tin foil hats favored by many Fox News viewers. A MIT study found that wearing tin foil hats actually amplifies mind control rays, instead of blocking them. Something to think about.

This poll is a sad testament indeed, to the sorry state of what serves as journalism, in the twenty-first century.

I do not understand why you do not know the difference between opinion shows and actual news. It seems, however, that “chattahbox” is not familiar with that simple fact. Fox has both opinion shows and news. So does CNN. The news is the news. It stands alone.

Journalism is not dead. Your logic and critical thinking seem to be in their on their death beds though.

I don’t see why the results surprised anyone.

The mainstream media refered to the Tea Party as a handful of right-wing nuts, Nazis and Tea Baggers who represented a danger to society. I don’t think that was a realistic portrayal – Neither did the folks in Mass.

This is just one of many examples. The media believes the people want more social programs when they really just want a responsible government and a balanced budget.

In a word, yes. See the comments by “Douglas Stevenson” on this page, for example; he seems to be unaware that Fox News is the *only* media service that has ever gone to court to win the right to fabricate stories and broadcast them as news. See also “Rick Lippit’s” remarks; he fails to understand that the Brown Shirts are, and have been since the 1930s, a fascist organization which stands for racism and intolerance, and who are currently members “in good standing” of the Tea Baggers.

People love to hate Fox, but never have I seen an example of false reporting on their part. I do believe that people allow their opinions of Fox’s opinion shows to influence their view of Fox’s news coverage.

Is there actual evidence of Fox fabricating or altering the news? Or do they simply report from a conservative angle?

There is one “news” organization that tells the right what they want to hear (well, more accurately – there is one “news” organization that tells the right what they want the right to hear). The others lean pretty much to the left, some more than others.

49ish percent for FOX – half the country who are republicans.

The remainder of the pie split among the half of the country who are democrats or moderates.
